Day 4 in Lagos

By |2013-12-06T01:35:53+00:00December 6th, 2013|Funding trip, Lagos, Thoughts|0 Comments

This morning I woke up earlyish to go to the Lagos short film festival which was billed to start at 9:30am, I was ready on time but unfortunately the driver had a pressing errand to run which means I got there at 10:30 instead. Now I rushed up the stairs thinking, OMG I'm late and I'm going to be walking in at the wrong moment.  Like the time me and my best friend were late for a funeral and we arrived as they were bringing the coffin out of the church. Truly embarrassing moment and that was down to the M3 being closed. Anyway I digress and to cut a long story short, the whole thing didn't start until 12:37pm. I've been away too long and I'm still operating on Western Time. :-)  It's day 4 of my trip and each morning I quail at the enormity of the task ahead, [...]

Day 3 in Lagos

First day I wasn't up at the crack of dawn and managed to sleep till 8am for a change.  A sort of productive day, kicking round ideas on the film industry in Nigeria and how I was going to make Imagine This an enticing prospect for investors to want to put their hands in their pockets. First problem I have is there are no available statistics to show ROI on films made in Nigeria, HOAYS, which could be used as a bench mark has not been released yet so those investors are yet to see any money coming in.  Films like Phone Swap, or Last Flight to Abuja which are still fairly low budget but well made films have no readily available data to use for comparison. It would be interesting to find out how much film revenue is actually generated at the Nigerian box office.  How many Nigerians actually go to [...]

Day 2 in Lagos

It's been day 2 and a little bit of headway has been made.  I ventured off the Island and headed into the mainland to an important meeting which was arranged as I was on my way to another meeting in Gbagada.  I did my first ever film pitch and it wasn't until I was halfway though that I actually realised I was trying to sell the idea to this guy.  Which is when the panic set in and the levee's breached underneath my arms and all the tips and tricks I'd learnt in the past couple of months just went to pot. Despite my mumbling and fumbling with sentences, I was able to articulate my vision for the film and in the process, bag myself an Executive Producer (EP).  Which means I've gone from being a team of me to a team of two.  Yay.  I've also set up a [...]

Day 1 in Lagos

Today has been a bit of a non starter, bought myself a sim card which had to be registered.  Was told to wait 1 hour before activating, 10 hours later and I'm still waiting for service.  So have been available only on email, which hasn't been great for setting up appointments. I've been thinking about my Herculean task and what I really need are industry partners who know the business, and the ins and outs of film financing.  Although I'm having to learn really fast, film finance is not my greatest strength.  As mentioned in an earlier post, I've little expectation of being able to raise the required capital, however I'm going to give it a darn good go and dazzle them with my projections and my story and hope that something resonates. I want to make a film that is commercial and successful, but the feedback I've received so far [...]
