DJ,

I really am losing the will to live.  Ruth at Borders has just sent me another email, despite the fact that Gardners have asked for 50% discount, she won’t order because in their infinite wisdom, Gardners have decided not to stock the book (I don’t know why) even though I have 2 customers who want to order it.  Gardners have put it on special order, which means the booksellers don’t get SOR, which are the terms Borders are demanding.  So here I am, having done the hard sell to Borders and Play.com for bloody Gardners to foul up everything.  They don’t lose anything, I’m the one who will have to swallow the cost of having books returned if they don’t sell.  Maybe I’m being completely obtuse about the finer points of commerce.

Alan Street from Gardners is avoiding my calls, as soon as I mentioned my name to the lady who took my call he suddenly became busy.  I guess in the greater scheme of things, SW Books isn’t a major player or client so he doesn’t need to speak to me.  I’m pretty pissed off about the whole BS, especially after the PR person I spoke to wanted to know where Imagine This is stocked.  I fudged and said I’m working on a several deals, which is the truth.  But now seems unlikely to come to fruition.  Someone give me a whip.

I’ve gone back to Mike S, not sure if he’s their head buyer or what, but at least he took my call.  According to him, he’ll speak to Alan and will make sure he gets in touch to explain the situation.  It’s the same run around, but at least he’s being polite, even got an email within minutes of my bewildered phone call.

Dear Sandra,

Nice to speak to you earlier. I’ve asked Alan/Maria to give you a call.

If you haven’t heard anything by end of Monday give me a shout. – Can’t promise anything I’m afraid, but will see what I can do.

All the best

mike
I’m not holding my breath, my silver lining is that I haven’t spent thousands on PR, only for potential clients not to be able to get hold of the book.
